Wish I Never Bought It!! #4 - Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream

I'm not one for using eye creams, they have never been a part of my daily skincare routine. At 22, I thought it was about time I started using them, as they say it's never too early to start. When I was in Brown Thomas a while ago I  wanted to pick up their Even Skintone Ilumminator serum, it was in a set with two sample sized products, their  Day Wear Anti-Oxidant mosturiser and Night Repair cream eye. Seeing as the samples were quite generous I decided to buy it, surely there's no better way to start using eyecream then by trying a eye product I've heard such great things about. I couldn't be more wrong, this Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream was a complete and other nightmare for me. I can't fault the other products, as I've yet to try the moisturiser and I've been getting on pretty well with the Even Skintone serum thus far.

At 5ml, the Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream mini was the perfect size for me to get a clear idea of what the product was like. I've had this for quite a while but I only got around to using it on Tuesday night, looking back now I WISH I never had. Having worked in a skincare company for a while I know the right way to apply eye cream, steer clear of the soft skin around your eye and using your ring finger dot it on your socket bone and gently massage in. I learnt that if you put it on that soft bit of skin it sinks right in, which results in puffy eyes. Not a look I'd want to go for at all. Now back to my experience with this product, basically I applied this and after a few minutes something didn't feel quite right. My skin was burning so of course I panicked, some of you may of noticed my tweets on Tuesday night. I looked in the mirror, no joke I had a big red half circle under both eyes and boy was this painful. The lovely Sue tweeted me and told me to slap on some aloe vera, thankfully come the next day the swelling had disappeared which I couldn't be happier about. I just got such a fright and I thought it was going to stay like that for ages. I never tend to get allergic reactions so I don't know how my skin reacted so badly to this product. Even though I heard so many amazing things about this stuff through other blogs, it will certainly teach me to be more careful and do more research in the the future before using products on my skin. I was so disappointed with this product I'm going to throw it away, I wouldn't want to give it to anyone else just in case they had the same sort of reaction. Thank god I didn't buy the full sized tub it would of been such a waste. I'll be laying off eye creams for a while now but I'm sure I'll be on the lookout for a new one shortly.

What eye creams do you highly rate? Have you tried Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair Eye cream?

    1. I've heard such great things about Dermalogica products but I've yet to try anything from the brand. I'll have to look at this eye cream the next time I'm in my local beauty salon. xxx

  2. Such a shame that this product didn't work out for you! I absolutely love it and never had any kind of reaction from it. I highly rate Dermalogica as well if you're looking for an alternative :-) x

  3. I have to be honest, I have never used an eye cream and have absolutely no idea what to do with one. I do know that generations of women in my family use olay tho and all have very good skin and no crows feet or wrinkles, so if Olay do an eye cream it might be worth a shot!

    1. Yeah I was the same until recently too, it was only when I started working for a skincare brand that I started using them myself. I've heard great things about Olay products, my Mom swears by them. I'll have to look out for the eye cream the next time I'm in Boots xx

  4. My mother in law gave me a sample of this and I tried it and woke up with what felt like sunburn around my eyes! This was the only thing I had done differently, so I haven't used it again and just going back to my basic moisturizer. I've had similar issues with retinol products before, but this doesn't have that so I thought I was okay. Apparently, I need to find something else for wrinkles! Just wanted you to know that I had an issue too!

  6. Same here . It made both eyelids puffy, so much so that my eyelid looked sunken in. It caused redness and scaling . I thought it was allergies, but it was the product. Be careful.

    2. Yes.!! Exactly my experience! Using Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream. Funny thing is the first like two days my skin looked amazing. Then I work up to swollen and peeling eyes. I hope it goes always soon. It’s been over three days and my eyes look terrible.

  7. I used this product once and have had a very bad reaction to it. It looks like a bad sun burn. Red swollen, puffy big puss pockets under both eyes. It has over a week now and they are still so sore and painful i ended up in the emergency room. I am now on prescription Cream to try and heal it. I will never use this brand again.

    1. I had a very bad allergic reaction as well similar to your with some red itchy bumps. I have read a lot of bad reviews about this eye cream on Sephora and even the Estee Lauder web.

  8. I definitely had the same reaction. I had red patches all underneath my eyes. Hydrocortisone helped to heal them. I did feel a tingle when I first applied and thought like everyone else, wow... it’s working. Lol. How silly! I wonder what ingredient causes the burns?!

  9. I had the same reaction. Its been about 2 years, but last week I had stopped at the estee counter and was given a sample. I completely forgot about the reaction. OMG, first, it burned a little, i continued with my make up for the day. By end of day, the histamines in my head were wild, i couldnt keep my eyes open. Next 4 days, including today, my eyes were read, puffy, wrinkled, dry patches. Awful experience.

  10. Thank you so much for this post, I thought I was going crazy thinking that it was all in my mind. I started using it, got puffy eyes, red skin, that even ruptured, then stopped using it, and it went away. I thought I had rubbed too hard when taking makeup off, and so started using this again, then the same thing happened, so I know it was not in my head. Thank you!!!!

  12. I am having a burning reaction when I use this product as well. The skin under my eyes is cracked, red and burns to apply anything to the area. I sought out information after having this reaction. Glad to hear it’s not just me and that I should definitely discontinue the use.

    1. I hope it cleared up soon. I’m waiting for eyes skin to heal. Looks terrible. I put base on to go to store. My under eyes looked terrible. Swollen and peeling. Red. Just terrible.

  14. It also burns my eyes. At first it was okay, but the more I use it, the more it burns. Idk if it makes the skin around your eye area sensitive or what. Might just use it on my fine lines from now on as it does help pump up and soften the skin.

  17. I had the same reaction to the EL Advanced Night repair eye cream about a year ago, and then last night to the La Mer eye concentrate. Same reaction to both and both made by the same parent company with some identical ingredients. I've been trying to narrow down what exactly is causing this through comparing products on CosDNA, possibly algae extract or the isododecane (solvent, fragrance). I've never had a reaction to any other skincare product or eye cream, and don't have any allergies that I know of. It's heartbreaking, but at least it's a bit encouraging to see other people have had the same experience.

  23. I’m having the same experience! I purchased the mini because i heard so many good reviews about it, but when I tested it out it started to burn my under eyes. I took it off and put on the cerave under eye cream instead. This morning I awoke to my under eyes flaky peeling & burning. :((

  24. I found this forum by searching eye problems after using this product. I do not have sensitive skin. Never had issues with Makeup or soaps, etc
Unfortunately it took me twice to figure out what the issue was. My under was extremely swollen, red, burning. Then as the swelling went down, the skin stayed scaly and dry, wrinkled up and red for a few weeks! It would burn after everything I put on it. Now I'm currently going through it a second time and realize what caused it. I even had to see a doctor. Wonder what ingredient is in it that causes this???
